This is my seventh or eighth book detailing how the American Christian church needs to evolve if it wants to stay relevant nd reach the world for the sake of the gospel In Church 30 Cole rgues that the early church immediately fter Christ s crucifixionresurrectionascension was version 10 Cole uses the nalogy of operating system versions nd the institutionalized church beginning The Hired Man about 300 AD was version 20 Since then we have been stuck inn obsolete version for 1700 years hence the need for version 30 Like the other books Cole calls for missional church model lthough he doesn t condemn the church growth model s most other books have he simply sees the current church growth model s ineffective Almost A Gentleman and that missional model would spur far larger nd uicker growth Similarly Cole s call for discipleship partially roots itself in the belief that only through the scalability of discipleship can the church grow exponentially uicker nd larger nd effectively Cole calls for improved training of church leadership with move way from the Pastor s CEO model to pastors with deeper understandings of theology nd pologetics nd communication skills Cole s prose throughout is far intellectual than other books of this kind others tend to be exhortative pointing to Scripture s if the reader didn t understand how the early church operated While Cole uses Scripture to back up his points he Here by the Bloods also uses research studies practical examplesnd organized charts nd graphs to make his points On the plus side I ppreciated the practical cademic nature of many of his rguments On the other hand Cole utilizes lot of cronyms nd terms throughout which got both confusing nd nnoying especially because I was reading half dozen of these books Bound (Torn Trilogy, at the same time Overall I found thismong the better half of the what is wrong with the church books I ve read Recommended I had some doubts in the beginning but it is not book gainst the organized religious forms but can be good ddition to existing structures some challenge nd inspiration of course lso some things to debate I especially liked the parts Loyalty and Lies about the different New Testament churchesnd the today examples Reading through the book you re constantly reminded that much of what we do in Church 20 is driven by tradition nd custom Cole digs through the various elements of what is called church to discover what is essential Fortunes Flames and how the changing cultural landscape is transforming how we think of church One of the most insightfulspects of the book is his study of groups by size nd the purpose each serves As he points out the church has unfortunately been ttempting to ccomplish its function using groupings that re not ppropriate for the task.
